Voorspoedig outargiese jaar - aardskip . com - Prosperous off-grid year - Goto the weblog for more info.

Laas jaar het ontsettend droog en warm geëindig, maar gelukkig het ons nou al redelik reën ontvang. Hier is die reënval so ver gemeet by aardskip, dit word om 6:00 elke ogend gemeet:
12 Jan - 16,0mm
14 Jan - 2,2mm
17 Jan - 2,0mm
19 Jan - 0,8mm
20 Jan 12,5mm
22 Jan – 0,8mm

Die watertenks is so 65% vol. Dit gee ons ongeveer 20kl water wat ons so 4 maande moet hou.

Hier is twee fotos van interessante vrugte wat ons in die toekoms kan verwag. Die eerste foto is van ons pekanneut boom buite wat ons swartwater gebruik. Die ander foto is een van ons druiweranke binne in die huis wat ons grys water gebruik.

Last year ended extremely dry and hot, but fortunately we already received a reasonable amount of rain. Here are the rainfall so far measured at the earthship, it is measured every moring at six o'clock:
12 Jan - 16,0 mm
14 Jan - 2,2mm
17 Jan - 2,0mm
19 Jan - 0,8mm
20 Jan 12,5mm
22 Jan – 0,8mm

The tanks are about 65% full. This gives us more or less 20 kl of water and should last as about four months.

Here are two pictures of interesting fruit we can expect in the future. The first photo is of our pecan tree outside using our black water. The other picture is one of our inside grape vine which uses our gray water.

Actual Solar Power verus Model - aardskip.com - Werklike sonkrag versus Model.

In the graph you see the actual and theoretical solar power in kWh per kW installed PV pannels average per day every month.

In die grafieke sien u die werklike en  teoretiese sonkrag in kWh per kW geïnstalleer panele gemiddeld per dag elke maand.


The following points can be derived from the chart:
+ These model values includes a 40% loss.
+ Both values is kWh per kW installed PV pannel.
+ The panels are installed at a angle of 40 degrees.
+ The discrepancies (in. March, October) could be from weather conditions.

Effect of the PV direction on the Solar Power - aardskip.com - Effek van die sonpaneel se rigting op krag lewering

In the graphs you see the theoretical effect of the solar panel's direction on the solar power in kWh per kW in installed per day.

In die grafieke sien u die teoretiese effek van die sonpaneel se rigting op die sonkrag in kWh per kW geinstalleer per dag.


The following points can be derived from the chart:
  • [30 NS] - solar panel's angle is 30 degrees in the north-south direction on the horizon at a latitude -29.83.
  • [30 W] - solar panel's angle is 30 degrees in the western direction from the horizon.
  • [Beide] - Half of the solar panels are tilted NS and the other half is tilted in the Western direction at 30 degrees.
  • The panels tilted at a 30 degrees in the North-South direction offer the best results, Winter and Summer.
  • The panels tilted at a 30 degrees in the western direction give the worst results, an average loss of 24% per year.
  • Even a combination of panels deliver worse results, an average loss of 12% per year.
Note: Due to other losses will the practical results be about 85% of the theoretical results. Furthermore, we can assume that heat in the summer will reduce the power.

Sonkrag en verbruik- aardskip-com - Solar power and usage - Goto the weblog for more info.


The graphs shows the solar energy received in the earthship in BLUE and in RED is our consumption in kWh.

The following points can be derived from the chart:
1. The solar power is generally more than the consumption.
2. In the case where the solar power is less than consumption, the system will compensate the next day.
3. It happens, because the system is trying to keep the batteries full.
4. Winter is the solar slightly less than in the Summer.
5. The maximum kWh is attained in the Fall and Spring.
6. Makisimum in one day was 11,7kWh for a 2kW PV and 254Ah batteries.
7. Minimum was 0,7kWh and the average was 6,77kWh.
8. The total delivered was 6,1MWh (Mega Watt hours) over the period of 2. 5 years.

What was you electricity bill the last 2.5 years?

5. Die maksimum word behaal in die Herfs en Lente.
6. Maksimum in een dag was 11,7kWh vir ‘n 2kW stelsel.
7. Minimum was 0,7kWh en gemiddelde was 6,77kWh.
8. Die totaal gelewer is 6,1MWh (Mega Watt uur) oor tydperk van 2, 5 jaar.

Reënval en tenks watervlak - aardskip.com - rainfall and tanks water level.


In die grafiek sien u ons watervlak in ons 30kl tenks. 'n Vlak van 2000mm is 100% vol.

Die volgende punte kan van die grafiek afgelei word:
1.   U sal merk dat in 2013 het ons die tenks 3 keer met rivierwater aangevul, geen reënval maar tog word die tenks voller.
2.  In 2014 en 2015 was dit nie nodig nie.
3.  U sal sien dat die tenks drie keer in 2014 en eenkeer in 2015 oorgeloop het.
4.  Laastens van die grafiek kan ons ook aflei dat dit waarskynlik binne kort gaan begin reën.

1.   You will note that in 2013 we filled the tanks three times with river water, not rainfall but the tanks were fuller.
2.   In 2014 and 2015 it was not necessary.
3.   You will see the tanks were three times in 2014 and once overfull in 2015.
4.   Finally, from the chart we can conclude that it probably will rain soon.

Realiteitsmuseum en EJM en Snappy - aardskip.com - Reality museum, EJM and Snappy

The earthship is once again open as an open air museum or if you will a reality show. Thanks to my company EJM, http://www.ejm.co.za/. We are again able do do earthship viewings for a small donations, guideline is R25 per person and R100 for groups. More or less is also welcome. People living in Orania can view the earthship for free.

A couple of months ago I mention that my Snappy induction plate packed up and in the process my Nelson Adams inverter also packed up. Both got fixed, but the Snappy and the inverter refuse to work together.

So all things considered I decided to move away from the fancy induction plate technology to more conventional technology that is not so fragile and with so much electronics. Just to expensive to get fixed all the time. So I bought an Ceramic two plate hob and a normal kettle. Interesting I still
have enough power.

The fact is a normal kettle is much faster than the Snappy and the Ceramic plates as seen in the photo does not waste much more energy than the much more fragile induction plate.

Die aardskip is weer oop as 'n opelug museum of as jy wil 'n realiteitsprogram. Met dank aan my maatskappy EJM, http://www.ejm.co.za/. Ons is weer in staat om aardskip-besoeke aan te bied in ruil vir klein donasies, riglyn is R25 per persoon en R100 vir groepe. Minder of meer is ook welkom. Vir Oraniërs is dit gratis.

'n Paar maande gelede het ek noem dat my Snappy induksie plaat opgepak het en in die proses my Nelson Adams omsetter ook opgepak. Beide is herstel, maar die Snappy en die omsetter weier om saam te werk.

So alles in ag genome het ek besluit om weg te beweeg van die ingewikkelde induksie plaat tegnologie na 'n meer konvensionele tegnologie wat is nie so broos en met soveel elektronika werk nie. Dus het ek vir ons 'n Keramiek twee plaat stoof en 'n normale ketel gekoop. Interessant genoeg ons het nog steeds genoeg krag.

Die feit is 'n normale ketel is baie vinniger as die Snappy en die Keramiek plate soos gesien in die foto nie gebruik nie veel meer krag as die veel broser induksie plaat nie.

EJM, tamaties en termiesemassa - EJM, tomatoes and thermal mass.

Ludwig het 'n sagteware werk gekry by EJM (http://www.ejm.co.za/), wat ons volhoubaarheid in Orania sal waarborg. Ons moet by sê, slegs in afhanklikheid van God.

Ludwig has received a software job at EJM (http://www.ejm.co.za/), which will guarantee his sustainability in Orania. I have to say, only in dependence on God.






Wat wel gebeur by die aardskip is dat dit vir ons van groente voorsien dwarsdeur die jaar, winter en somer. Hier sien julle twee fotos van ons tamatie-oes die week.

Verder werk die termiesemassa wel deeglik. Die ander dag was hier 'n paartjie en toe ek hulle in die kamer in vat, vra hulle hoe kry ek die kamer so koel, het ons 'n lugversorger.

Furthermore the thermal mass most definitely works. The other day a couple came to the earthship and when I show them the room they asked where is the air-conditioner.

Sonkrag sleepwa - aardskip.com - Solar Power Trailer.


Currently I am working on a number of projects and unfortunately not one of them is our own earthship.

1. Designed and installed an off-grid solar system at a farmhouse close to Orania, photos to follow.
2. Designed and installed a load shedding system for a house in Orania, photos to follow.
3. Designed and install a solar power system in a trailer to be used a an portable power at any building site, see photos
4. Analyses off-grid solar system at a house in Orania. System did not last a full day. With a small adjustment on the MPPT and training of the people the problem was mostly solved.

Tans is ek besig met 'n aantal projekte en ongelukkig is nie van hulle ons eie aardskip.

1. Ontwerp en installering van 'n eiland sonkragstelsel by 'n plaashuis naby Orania, foto's volg.
2. Ontwerp en installering van 'n beurtkrag-stelsel vir 'n huis in Orania, foto's volg.
3. Ontwerp en installering van 'n sonkrag stelsel in 'n sleepwa wat gebruik kan word as 'n verskuifbare kragbron op enige bouperseel, sien foto's.
4. Ontleed van 'n eiland sonkrag stelsel by 'n huis in Orania. Stelsel kon nie 'n volle dag krag verskaf nie, met 'n klein aanpassing op die MPPT en opleiding van die mense het die probleem feitlik opgelos.
